Edward Higgins White II (1930 - 1967) was a test pilot and NASA astronaut. He was an Air Force officer (part of a long line of military officers in his family) and was a star athlete at West Point. He was selected by NASA for the astronaut program in 1962 as one of the “New Nine,” the second astronaut group after the Mercury 7.
In 1965, he became the first American to walk in space on Gemini 4. He shared a capsule with his best friend, Jim McDivitt. His spacewalk lasted 21 minutes and he called its end “the saddest moment of my life.”
In 1966, he was selected to be part of the Apollo 1 prime crew, alongside Gus Grissom and Roger Chaffee. This selection, unfortunately, sealed his fate. During a routine launch pad test on January 27, 1967, he died in a flash fire with his two colleagues. He was only 36. His legacy is momentous.
Also, he was a total babe, as evidenced by this photo. He was the second redheaded astronaut, after John Glenn.
